Come gather batteries with us: Together, let's make this Sunday special!
11:00 | 28/06/2024

A typical Sunday becomes special when everyone does their share to safeguard the environment. The hotel chain, which has 12 locations throughout the country, has used the hotel lobby as a collection point for batteries in exchange for a cold glass of water to encourage the community to identify and treat chemical waste.

Sustainable lifestyle initiatives that have a significant impact

Initiatives such as abstaining from plastic straws, carrying personal water bottles or cups, opting for eco-friendly alternatives like cloth bags instead of plastic ones, participating in litter clean-ups, and gathering and disposing of used batteries at designated locations have gained significant traction on social media platforms, garnering responses from millions of individuals. Furthermore, this phenomenon goes beyond mere campaigns; it has evolved into a way of life, a routine that gives people new pleasures.

In order to foster the development of environmentally conscious behaviors, several businesses and communities have implemented initiatives that incentivize individuals by providing rewards for their active participation.

In early June 2024, the People's Committee of Ward 3 in Bac Lieu Province conducted an initiative to trade plastic garbage for rice, as well as a program to exchange trash for trees in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. These activities were coordinated by the non-profit environmental preservation group, Green Life. Recently, SOJO Hotels, the trendiest hotel brand in Asia, has initiated a campaign named Come gather batteries with us to collect used batteries in exchange for complimentary beverages. The initiative is being executed by the environmentally conscious hotel brand, SOJO Hotels, across all 12 of its establishments. The program will continue until the conclusion of 2024.

An old battery containing mercury may pollute 500 liters of water or 1 cubic meter of soil for a duration of 50 years, due to its poisonous nature. Chemical waste, including spent batteries, has not been adequately categorized and gathered within the community for an extended period of time. Organizations sporadically collect old batteries and do not consistently sustain these collections, resulting in ineffective treatment of this trash.

The event JOGreen - Come gather batteries with us takes place from June to December 31, 2024, at 12 hotels belonging to the countrywide SOJO Hotels hotel chain.

Accordingly, each of the hotels under the SOJO hotel system, including 12 establishments in Hanoi, Thai Binh, Nam Dinh, Bac Giang, Hoa Binh, Viet Tri (Phu Tho), Ha Long (Quang Ninh), Lang Son, Hau Giang, Lao Cai, Dak Lak, and Can Tho, will be equipped with a box to collect old batteries located at the counter.

My family is really supportive of this activity. My two kids are also more conscious of the need to preserve the environment; they even actively remind my husband and me to gather used batteries and swap them, remarked Ms. Nguyen Thuc Anh from Lang Son.

With a conversion rate of 10 batteries = 1 drink, patrons who gather old batteries and bring them to JO247 Lounge, the restaurant of SOJO Hotels, on Sunday will receive one complimentary drink from the JOGreen menu. Old batteries will be gathered and then sent by SOJO Hotels Technology Hotel to a treatment facility to guarantee environmental safety.

Towards a sustainable future

One of the initiatives SOJO Hotels takes to support green tourism trends and encourage guests to adopt eco-friendly practices is JOGreen - Come gather batteries with us. Previously, the whole SOJO hotel network turned off the lights to join visitors in turning on love for the environment for Earth Hour every year.
